Dearka/Yzak

In the Gundam SEED fandom, there are many, many pairings of choice; canon pairings, pairings with possible hints to, ones with believable backing, pairings of people who've met once or even sometimes not at all. Dearka/Yzak would fall into the third category, and they have a load of amazing potential and backing to their ship. Dearka/Yzak is my OTP, if this shrine's existence didn't stress that enough, and although this essay is overall based on my opinions, I know a lot of the Dearka/Yzak fandom shares these reasons. (the Ship Manifesto essay presents some other opinions)

As I went into in both Yzak and Dearka's profiles, they had a large, significant impact on each other. Toward the beginning of the series, you'll notice that although they were not as out there as they were toward the end, that they were constantly together, and constantly shown agreeing with each other to give the unconscious feel that there is a bond there. They're part of the Klueze-team, and from what we see, they don't interact much with Nicol, and Yzak shows a constant jealousy and dislike toward Athrun.

The novels and drama show that Dearka is the only person around that can comfort or placate Yzak when he's angry or upset about something. Every time Yzak leaves the room in a sour mood (which is more often than not, in the series), Dearka is right behind him, and with Yzak's short and violent temperament, Dearka not only rooms with him but is shown to be quite used to it, and caring enough to talk to him about things. The Suit CD 5 drama shows how well Dearka really does know Yzak, through the attitude and the ego, when he explains to Athrun that that's just the way he is. With ways various fandoms interpret various things, everything mentioned so far are in comparison, very good and solid reasons for a ship like them.

With slash pairings, it can get a little sticky because like all fandoms, opinions differ. It's fine to not support a pairing, everybody is like that, but there's a line between that and going around bothering people who hold a different opinion, being rude to them and telling them that their pairing sucks, they're just best friends, the fandom is made up of retarded fangirls, etc. Nobody thinks their pairing sucks! That's why they like said pairing so much in the first place.

Yzak and Dearka were always together in the series, and even despite their separation they tried so hard to be able to be together again in a peaceful situation, and were obviously so very torn over the idea of being enemies, and NEVER attacked one another in the battlefield. When they're reunited in the end, they work together on PLANT, and continue to stay together all through Destiny, with the same dreams, same goals, with a deeper bond and appreciation for each other than they had at the start.

Yzak even risked his life and was prepared to die with Dearka in the last episode of SEED, that's devotion. And the fact that Yzak, one who is constantly looking for admiration from others, had no qualms with having Dearka -- a known defector of ZAFT -- on his team, despite how others might look at that.

It's undeniable that there is a deep bond between them, relationship or not, and there is such a chemistry between them in the way they work and just are. You can't take one without the other, for the most part, and they mean something to each other, they invoke emotion in each other that they don't show to anybody else. They understand each other best, and as stated in places, are just comfortable in the other's presence.

Pairing wise, they would make an awesome one. Their personalities make for some interesting chemistry, and on foreign forums I visit, I constantly see people remarking that they already act like a married couple. Fandom imagination is wonderful; "what happened after they left that room when Dearka went to go calm him down?" "I wonder if there's something more to Yzak's not being able to shoot Dearka, and being so torn over the whole situation". They have so many great undertones in the series, and discussion on them is what makes the fandom and the pairing so very enjoyable.
